Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.

( Thanksgiving est célébré le 4ème jeudi de novembre )

It is a national holiday in the United States.

( C’est une fête nationale aux États Unis. )

Thanksgiving is a way to commemorate the Pilgrims who settled in the U.S in the 1600s.

The Pilgrims were  people from England who left their homeland and sailed to the U.S .

—> A l’époque, en Angleterre si on n’appartenait pas à l’église anglaise ( « the Church of England » ) onétait envoyé en prison. Un groupe qui n’avait pas ces croyance ( il voulaient une religion plus « pure » , c’est pour cela qu’on les a appelés « Puritans » )a quitté l’Angleterre ( sur un bateau célèbre le Mayflower )pour rejoindre le Nouveau Monde ( l’Amérique )

—> En anglais, ce voyage s’appelle « pilgrimage » ==> d’où leur nom « Pilgrims »

When the Pilgrims arrived it was hard for them, but they were helped by native Americans who gave them seeds and taught them how to plant crops.

( A leur arrivée, ils ont été aidés par des indiens qui leur ont donné des graines, leur ont montré comment planter etc.. )

===> Thanksgiving starts  : Pilgrims thank for what they received.

Today the tradition goes on.

People eat turkey, spend time together.

They also say what they are grateful for.  ( health, family ... )
